Minettas Nightstar would also cap off the weekend by picking up the ASHA Award for 'Three-Year-Old Alberta Sired Filly' while Diane Bertrand's Shoplifter Hanover would claim the ASHA Award for 'Three-Year-Old Filly'.
Team Hudon would click for four winners on the Friday card. Gerry Hudon scored aboard Hollywood Breeze ($6.10), Bridgette Hanover ($8.30), and the maiden-breaking colt Kg Rowan ($16.70) - a Modern Art half-brother to Kg Art Dreamer. Hudon also won with his newest stable starter, Drumheller ($8), later in the eighth. The five-year-old gelding, claimed for $10,000 last time out, matched his lifetime mark of 1:55.1 with a front-end effort.
"Kg Rowan is a nice colt," says Hudon. "I like him alot. He goes along real good... real easy and I'm thinking he'll show lots more in the weeks ahead."
Hudon now finds himself only 3 wins away from 2500 career driving victories. All the best on hitting that number soon Gerry!
All Canadian Mjjz (Jeff Stone) showed why he is currently the best aged pacer on the grounds after winning again in Open Pace action Saturday afternoon. Leaving from the rail the five-year-old son of Allamerican Native would pocket ride until the half-mile-pole before travelling first up against the pacesetter Bachelor Pad (Hudon). At the line it would be All Canadian Mjjz holding off a fast-closing Sixdaysontheroad (Bill Tainsh. Jr.) by a neck, while Hilldrop Shady (Brent Grundy) would nail down third.
All Canadian Mjjz aka 'Ham', owned by Larry Thomas and trainer Rod Starkewski, now has five wins, from his last six starts, against Alberta's best. His only blemish was a stumble on New Year's Eve where he did not finish. 'Ham' also picked up his third consecutive ASHA Award Saturday night - this time as 'Champion Aged Horse'. Well deserved indeed.
Top drivers on the matinee card included Brent Grundy (Cheswick, Wrangler Diva and Rs Merlin) for the triple, while Bobby Clark (Jam Session and Barona Ferrari), Jeff Stone (All Candain Mjjz and Crimson Promise) and Bill Tainsh Jr. (Gts Jake and Barona Java) picked up doubles. Trainers Rick Schneider (Cheswick and Crimson Promise) and Rod Starkewski (Rs Merlin and All Canadian Mjjz) would also have doubles on the day.
